Ear Aesthetic

What is Ear Aesthetic?

The ear aesthetic is different from the aesthetic of our other organs in some ways. Unlike other organs, our ears are visible from the front, side and back.

If the distance between the pinna and the head is larger than normal, it is often referred to as the “Prominent Ear” or “Prominent Ear” deformity. The conditions that often accompany the prominent ear problem are that the auricle is larger than normal, the ear folds are not formed sufficiently, and the ear cartilage called the concha is developed more than normal.

The individuals having the obvious ear problems try to hide this situation by growing their hair. However, this cannot always offer a solution, especially for the male gender where the hair cannot be extended.

Another important feature of the prominent ear deformity is that it is almost the only aesthetic intervention seen in childhood and needed. The school-age children are included in a different social environment for their school life. Unfortunately, depending on these extraordinary characteristics, they can be subject to verbal interference. Therefore, it is recommended that children with significant ear deformities be treated before school age.

Surgery and Period after the Surgery

The surgery can be performed under the local anesthesia in the individuals who have significant ear problems and are generally older than 12 years of age. The general anesthesia is often preferred in the younger age group. Depending on the patient’s condition, sometimes the local anesthesia and sedation (light sleepiness) can be applied together.

The procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours in total for both ears. During the procedure, a skin incision is made behind the ear and the entire operation is completed through this incision. After the healing period, a slight scar remains, which is cosmetically good and completely concealable.

In the surgery, the cartilage that makes the ear appear prominent can be reduced; missing ear folds are created to provide a natural look; the ear is brought closer to the scalp at an ideal angle. In addition to surgical threads, the cartilage is shaped by surgical methods to provide a permanent and effective solution to the patient.

After the procedure, a cotton dressing designed for the new ear shape and folds is used. This dressing stays on the patient for 2-3 days. In the control examination, the dressing is opened and not closed again. The patients can take a bath, and there is no need for the sutures. Depending on the shape of the ear before surgery, it can be recommended to use a bandana that goes over the ear in the weeks after the dressing is removed.
